Celebrating Black History Month Through Yoga

Yoga is often viewed as an ancient practice with Indian origins, but its adoption in Black communities has been transformative. It serves as a tool for healing, empowerment, and liberation. From historical figures like Rosa Parks, who turned to yoga for its healing benefits, to modern Black celebrities who use their platforms to promote wellness, Black yogis have played an essential role in shaping the practice in America.

During Black History Month, we celebrate the pioneers and trailblazers who have integrated yoga and mindfulness into their lives, overcoming systemic barriers to create inclusive spaces for wellness.

Rosa Parks and the Healing Power of Yoga

Many know Rosa Parks as the mother of the Civil Rights Movement, but few know she practiced yoga. In her later years, Parks engaged in yoga as part of her self-care and healing journey. USA Today reports that her yoga teacher, Aleta Usher, recalls Parks incorporating gentle yoga movements into her routine to maintain mobility and well-being. Parks’ embrace of yoga is a testament to its power in supporting resilience and longevity.

Black Yoga Pioneers Who Changed the Wellness Landscape

Though often underrepresented in mainstream yoga spaces, Black teachers, healers, and wellness leaders have long been shaping the practice in the U.S. Here are some of the figures who have significantly contributed to making yoga more accessible and inclusive:

Maya Breuer

Maya Breuer is a leading voice in the yoga community and a co-founder of the Black Yoga Teachers Alliance (BYTA). She has spent decades advocating for the inclusion of Black practitioners in the wellness industry. Breuer’s work focuses on using yoga to heal racial trauma, promote self-care, and foster a sense of empowerment.

Jana Long

Another co-founder of BYTA, Jana Long, has worked extensively to reclaim yoga’s spiritual aspects for Black practitioners. Her teachings emphasize the historical connections between yoga and African spirituality, making the practice feel more culturally relevant and accessible.

Yirser Ra Hotep

Yirser Ra Hotep, a master instructor of Kemetic Yoga, has helped popularize this form of yoga rooted in ancient Egyptian (Kemet) traditions. Kemetic Yoga incorporates breathwork, meditation, and slow, intentional movements to create a holistic healing practice that resonates with Black communities.

Dr. Gail Parker

A psychologist and yoga therapist, Dr. Gail Parker is known for her pioneering work in Yoga for Emotional Healing. She has written extensively on the ways yoga can help process racial trauma and promote mental health among Black individuals. Her work emphasizes the power of restorative yoga as a means of self-preservation and resilience.

The Healing Power of Yoga in Black Communities

For Black communities, yoga is more than just a physical exercise—it's a means of healing generational trauma, reclaiming wellness, and cultivating joy. The rise of Black-led yoga spaces, such as Black Yoga Teachers Alliance and Sacred Soul Wellness, reflects the growing movement toward inclusive, affirming wellness spaces.

Yoga’s emphasis on deep breathing, mindfulness, and body awareness offers a holistic approach to managing stress, anxiety, and physical tension—issues disproportionately affecting Black communities due to systemic challenges. By embracing yoga, Black practitioners continue the legacy of their ancestors, who found strength in movement, rhythm, and spirituality.
